William F. Gavin served as Special Assistant to Robert H. Michel. These materials, apparently only a portion of the records Gavin created, are divided into two parts. The first, which is arranged chronologically, contains materials used in preparing remarks for Michel's use. The second is a subject series arranged alphabetically. It consists of reference materials, clippings, and occasional memos and correspondence related to legislative matters. Major subjects include Contra aid and Central American policy, legislation to outlaw desecration of the flag, the nuclear freeze, and the October Surprise investigation.

The Robert H. Michel Papers are currently being processed. It is possible that additional material related to Gavin files will be located and added to the series later.
