Since 1997, The Center has been involved
in three book-length publications.
Masters of the House, published by Westview Press, a
division of Harper/Collins, contained papers presented at a May
1995 conference on House leadership. The book provides
a picture of leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives
from early America to the recent past.
The Education of a Senator (University of Illinois Press,
1998), Everett Dirksen's autobiography, is a personal account
of his life told through anecdotes, observations, and lessons
learned. Senator Dirksen worked on this book until his
death in 1969, hoping that his story would make a positive impact
on a country marred by turmoil.
In August 1999, Westview Press published Congress and the
Decline of Public Trust. It contains the following
essays:
- "The Puzzle of Distrust," by Joseph Cooper, Johns Hopkins
University
- "Trust and Democracy: Causes and Consequences of Mistrust
in Government," by former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley
- "Insiders with a Crisis from Outside: Congress and
the Public Trust," by David M. Shribman, The Boston Globe
- "Appreciating Congress," by John R. Hibbing, University of
Nebraska-Lincoln
- "How Good People Make Bad Collectives: A Social-Psychological
Perspective on Public Attitudes Toward Congress," by Diana
C. Mutz, University of Wisconsin, and Gregory Flemming, Pew
Research Center
- "Congress, Public Trust, and Education," by Mary A. Hepburn
and Charles S. Bullock III, University of Georgia
- "Congress and Public Trust: Is Congress its Own Worst Enemy?" by
Roger H. Davidson, University of Maryland, College Park
